PATANJALI
YOGA SUTRAS
POST-25 –VERSE 29
CHAPTER.1 : SAMAADHI PAADHA
In Post.23,Verse.27 – we saw the significance of AUM sound in representing the Eeshwara. We must represent the whole Universe Internally, within our mind, with this word AUM. The sound is primordial in nature. We must constantly repeat this sound and contemplate on its meaning and significance.
APHORISM 29
thathah prathyak chethana
adhigamah api
antharaaya abhaavah cha
Ø thathah = Thereby
Ø prathyak = the individual, each
Ø chethana = consciousness
Ø adhigamah = attainment
Ø api = and
Ø antharaya = obstacles to yoga
Ø abhavah = get removed
Ø cha = and
When we do constant Japa (focused repetition) of AUM (or OM) and deeply contemplate on its meaning and significance, our individual, inner consciousness becomes more capable of Yoga, (because of inward search) and thereby the external and internal obstacles to yoga will also disappear.
The obstacles to Yoga will be detailed in the coming verses. But, the deep significance of AUM, its Japa and contemplation on its meaning and significance on a daily basis in our meditation practice – is stated as essential here. Patanjali mentions both the DOs and the DON’TS. In the earlier verse, what Sadhaka should do is stated and in this verse, its benefit is stated. In Next verse, we will see the Obstacles a Sadhaka must get rid of, for success in Yoga.
